    Where to stay in Cartagena

    Hotels in Cartagena
    Charleston Santa Teresa hotel
Along side the Santa Clara Hotel are the most popular and luxurious places in the historic center of Cartagena de Indias, being located in the southwest section of the wall, next to the [poi = 120953] Naval Museum [/ poi]. What is now the hotel, was the first convent of the walled city (the building dates back from the seventeenth century), built by a wealthy lady of the aristocracy of that era to spend the last years of her life in the company of the nuns. For sure you will sleep better here than in the Gethsemane Hostel (the cheapest area to stay), and the rooms aren't too expensive either (offers starting at 200 euros), but for me the 200 euros for accommodation would be half my budget for the trip in Colombia (obviously I don't recommend the majority of the places where I stay).

    Hotel Dann Cartagena
The Hotel Dann Cartagena is a site facing the sea, located in Little Lake in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). It's not a 7-star hotel, but the amenities are perfect. The rooms are spacious, clean and tidy, with great views of the city and sea. The impeccable staff were especially friendly and hospitable, always willingly to help with anything. It has a large pool just alongside the sand, so if the sea is rough, or is a little cold, just jump into the warm waters in the pool and relax for a while. Ideal for families or a couple on their honeymoon.

    Bed & Breakfast Casa Relax
Not everything in [poi = 123962] Gethsemane [/ poi] is hostels for backpackers and budget travelers. The neighborhood, in and of itself beautiful, but spoiled by a long decline, is now slowly changing and some foreigners are betting strongly against hotels without charm. This is the case of Relax House, a B & B run by a Frenchman who fell in love with [poi = 123420] Cartagena [/ poi]. The location is superb. The comfortable rooms overlook a courtyard with a large pool in the middle, which is surrounded by comfortable loungers. The hotel has a stunning lounge with a pool table, a large dining room and a modern kitchen facilities. The environment is warm and welcoming. Finally, I have to say that the value of Casa Relax is excellent.

    Casa El Carretero Hotel Boutique
It was difficult to find Casa El Carretero because there were no signs advertising its presence, but this makes sense, as the idea behind it is to make it feel like home. In fact, the staff are very attentive but only come if you call, as there's no reception. The three bedrooms are decorated in an Asian style. The best part is the breakfast, prepared to order by the lady (I don't remember her name!). Eggs, juices, pastries, good quality coffee, and more.

    Hotel Regatta Cartagena
I stayed at the Hotel Regatta Cartagena and I loved its beauty and modernity. It's friendly and bright, with wonderful views: I stayed on the 16th floor, which is a great spot for taking pictures and enjoying the sound of the sea. I recommend this hotel also because it is staffed by friendly, welcoming people. One night I lost my laptop, and received so much help from the staff! It's not a big hotel, and the cleaning is impeccable. Everything is perfect, up to and including the pillow! Many thanks to the great staff here.

Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena hotel
The Sofitel Legend has been classified as the best hotel in Cartagena de Indias by several surveys and international magazines. It's considered to be one of the best hotels in the Americas, and even worldwide. Located in the historic old town of Cartagena in the former Convent of Santa Clara, it has a unique charm thanks to its mixture of old and modern. Its service is simply fantastic - there's no doubting that this really is the best hotel in Cartagena de Indias!

    Casa Pestagua Hotel Spa
Sophisticated, luxurious, beautiful, romantic, relaxed ... it's hard to choose just one adjective to describe the exquisite Pestagua House, a colonial mansion from the early seventeenth century that's located in the heart of the [poi = 123420] Old City of Cartagena [/ poi]. Pestagua House, whose original owner was an Earl, went through years of decline until it was restored. It would be great to run as a luxury hotel-spa. It has a lovely pool surrounded by palm trees, a cozy bar, an elegant restaurant, a spa where you can get pampered, jacuzzi on the terrace to enjoy the magical sunsets and 12 Caribbean dream suites, make hotel Casa Pestagua unforgettable.

    The Blue House Hostel
The Blue House Hostel is a hotel aimed at kitesurfers. I have no interest in the sport, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere. There's good music by day, and it's calm at night. There's no hot water, but the truth is that it's quite normal and you won't miss it in the heat of Cartagena. A very pleasant place to stay in the heart of the walled city, with charming staff and good prices. Highly recommended.

Hotel LM A Luxury Boutique Hotel
If you want to ensure that your stay in Cartagena is exceptional, spend a night at the Hotel Boutique LM. It's located on a quiet street in the historic Bolivar Park area close to the center of the city. The rooms are cozy and air conditioned and the hotel has fine restaurants and incredible decor. You won't want to leave!

Armería Real Luxury Hotel & Spa
This boutique hotel has one of the best spas in the centre of Cartagena de Indias, in addition to a great restaurant. It is located on Calle del Pedregal in Gethsemane, near the Heredia Bridge and close to the Fort San Sebastian de Pastelillo - a very beautiful place. The area is quieter than the centre, but very good.

    Willy & Leo hotel
Even without a monopoly on the beach, these two brothers, Will and Leo, have monopoly on the cabins. There are many cabins extending along the coast where you can stay, or sleep in the shelter from mosquitoes, between the village of Mama Hugo and Martha. You can also rent a hammock if you prefer to be under the shelter of the stars.
    Hostels in Cartagena
    Media Luna Hostel
We stayed at this hostel a few days ago with two friends. The first day we arrived they stole all of our money from inside our locker in the room. The place is unsafe, the area of the city where it's located is the worst part and is terribly cared for. The hostel manager didn't want to take responsibility for what happened until we went to the police to report it. I don't recommend it to anyone.

Hotel Portal De San Diego By HMC
I did some research about this hotel and I liked the location and the price. It's in the historic centre of Cartagena, an old house with 11 renovated rooms. It's a small hotel, with each room having its own unique personal touch, so I'd consider it a boutique hotel. It's very simple, but clean and comfortable. One night in a double room costs around $100 - a good price in this expensive city. The daily rate includes free breakfast and wifi throughout the hotel. The rooms have TV, air conditioning and a minibar. The staff are very helpful, and happy to offer recommendations about places to visit and eat. Highly recommended.

    Hotel Marlin
What I liked most was the service from the staff. They are very friendly and honest. I stayed a couple of days, and I can't argue with a good price ... the rooms are small, but cozy, close to all the fun of the city (bars, clubs, restaurants, etc). I recommend it!

    Hugo's Place hotel
There are many hotels on the beach of Playa Blanca, but this is still a tourist favourite. Hugo, the leader of the native places of Cali, welcomes everyone with the same smile, and rents hammocks, tents, or cheap huts for those who prefer to sleep under the stars, and you also can enjoy your cocktail menus and cabins.

    Casa Peter
I've been wondering whether or not I should write this place up, because it seems that the owners really don't care about their hotel's publicity. They have no website, information is minimal, and it took over 24 hours to respond to my email query. But I wanted to stay here for personal reasons... To keep it short, Casa Peter is a beautiful colonial house in Cartagena that belonged to Peter Tomkins, an American writer who wrote the book "The Secret Life of Plants", which was the basis for a documentary with a soundtrack by Stevie Wonder, and a 1979 album that I have long cherished as one of my favourites. Peter died in 2007, and his house has been converted. There's no reception, and you have to knock on the door. The cleaning lady gives you a look, as if deciding whether or not you're worthy of being a client. She told me the manager would be here in a while, and in the meantime I could take a look at the house. It's hard to describe: it has 2 floors, but there are seven different staircases leading to places, sometimes closed. There's a colonial courtyard full of plants, and the only hotel-style touch is the two jacuzzis. The construction seems to consist of a series of impossible, Escher-like staircases. The rooms are all different, some are duplex, and prices vary from 30 to 100 €, breakfast included, but no A/C, which in Cartagena can be a problem, since the humidity is high and temperatures rise above 30 degrees. But I really enjoyed it, and it was a unique experience to stay here. It's a haven of peace in sometimes noisy Cartagena, where most taxi drivers seem to regard honking their horn as a hobby. The street does not appear on maps, but it is very easy to get from Santo Domingo street, pass the Plaza Santo Domingo, and at the end of the street, almost on the walls, on the right is Casa Peter, the secret life of a hotel in Cartagena.

    Hotel 3 Banderas
The service is very good, it's in a relaxed area, with a good variety of rooms and prices. I recommend it to anyone who wants to relax in the city.

    Hotel Casa de Las Palmas
This cozy hotel is located on Calle de las Palmas in the Gethsemane neighbourhood, hence its name. It has a beautiful courtyard that functions as a social area, 11 rooms, and a restaurant/bar. A good option.
