You can find this tiny city at the entrance of Camargue. It was built by St. Louis King of France in the 13th century because he sought an outlet to the Mediterranean. A walled city in the marshes, walls which can be traveled, after paying. From here you can see the whole city from above. At one end of this planned city is the Tour de Constance, an authentic medieval mass, a massive tower served as a prison and where the Templars were locked. A good start or end to a visit to Camargue.

Notre Dame Des Sablons

There is a strange mix of old and modern art in the Church of Notre Dame des Sablons, which is in the center of the medieval town of Aigues Mortes. Different styles exist together and make the place special. It is the oldest church, but the colorful windows are a result of restoration in the '60s. It's worth it to sit awhile and enjoy the color changes that occur the sunlight. Sometimes there is a more natural green and other times a dreamlike blue and so on. In the end, this play of light focuses your attention on them and time passes almost unnoticed this interesting medieval church.

Luis IX y Aigues Mortes
Louis IX and Aigues-Mortes ... a long story! Louis IX, King of France was one of the promoters and fighters of the Crusades in the Holy Land of the Middle East in the 13th century. To give the knights and soldiers boarding point towards far away lands that Christians want to reconquer, ordered the construction of the fort city of Aigues-Mortes, on the shores of the Mediterranean. Thecity had just begun to stand up when Louis IX left for the Crusades. Upon his return the citadel took shape. War and religion continued to mark the history. The Hundred Years War reached the city, where the bodies of the "Burgundians" were kept in the tower now called "Tour des Burgundians". Decades later, the religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics waved throughout France that reached the small sea fortress, where the towers served as prison. Today the importance of founder Louis IX is still evident: The statue in the middle of the main square of this small citadel is represented on horseback, while the most important festival of the people (and the area) is San Luis (25 August), medieval fair where residents, traders and other amateur historical costumes dress up in honor of the Holy King.
Flea Markets in Aigues-Mortes
The Flea´s Market

Cheerful market situated on a beautiful tree-lined avenue outside the walled city. As good as Madrid and due to my great memories of the Rastro, every time I see one of these markets on the street, I must wander through them. They are full of atmosphere, joy and in Aigues Mortes, reveal in its Mediterranean nature. Always, always, I can find something at a good price ;). When you go walking through the stalls, you suddenly find the walled city and you remember that you came to this city!. This is a cheerful market situated in a beautiful tree-lined avenue outside the walled city. Like a good madrilena, I cannot stop myself from gravitating towards these places. They are full of a wonderful, joyous atmosphere and, in Aigues Mortes, you can see the true Mediterranean spirit. You will always, always, find something at a good price ;). While you are strolling around, you will catch sight of the walls of the city and remember where you are, in such a beautiful town!

The defensive walls of this stunning medieval village Aigues Mortes are in pretty good shape and can be explored for free. English or French are the only languages that are on the informative panels, but it is worth climbing the numerous steps to take in the sights of the city and the seas. A recommendation: The night lighting is fantastic.
