The Gran Café is in iconic locale for a coffee, hot chocolate, or glass of wine in Zaragoza's beautiful historic district. The café's main claim to fame is its age and interior, a gorgeous relic from its previous days as a jewlery shop. It features the intricate hardwood ceilings that are endemic to Aragon's historical buildings, marble countertops, and a charming atmopshere that seems straight out of a movie about 1930's Paris.
The cafe serves typical Spanish coffeeshop fare: coffee, hot cholocate, churros, breakfasts, beer, wine, juice, and spirits. It's a wonderful place to recharge with a hot "cafe con leche" after a morning of exploring the historical district's cathedrals, basilica, towers, and museums.
If you like pasta, this is the place for you. I’ve eaten there twice, and trust me that just one course is more than enough since the portions are big and filling. I like it a lot.
It is not the pasta you eat at home, and if you want to try something new, you are in the right place.
The decoration is well cared for, and the prices are affordable in the medium range, a good dinner for €15 to €20.
El Tubois the emblematic zone in Zaragoza to have tapas, it consists of a complex of narrow streets between Alfonso I and Don Jaime I streets. You need a few days to try all the specialities.
But I recommend "La Cueva en Aragón", in Libertad Street number 16; also known as El Champiñón (The mushroom), because this is all it serves. We had them from the griddle, with a little oil, parsley and garlic; and three or four levels on a base of bread.
The next tapa could be in one of the oldest places, opened in 1870, “Bodegas Almau”, with a distinctive decoration on its façade, these days,portraits of celebrities. It has a great choice of wines from many areas. You can have them with any traditional tapa: small ham sandwiches, stuffed peppers, croquettes, cheese, ham or chorizo or some “banderillas”. It is in Estébanes Street 10.
At number 8 in the same Estébanes Street, we found "La casa de las empanadillas", a little place owned by a Lebanese man. You shouldn’t have any doubts about its speciality.
In "Vinos Nicolás" you can have a wine or beer, accompanied by a tapa of good ham and all of this without leaving Estébanes Street. And if you are still hungry, in Candolias Restaurant, among other great portions, you can try very well prepared “migas”.
Don’t leave without trying the “huevos a la republicana", they are incredible with ham, the potatoes well done, not greasy, and with a tomato sauce which gives a unique home-made touch. We ordered the portion, they also have it as a tapa, but it is worth it, because you would want more.
It has a wide variety of tapas, I tried the leek and Roquefort pasties, very tasty. I loved the decoration, you lose yourself among such curious detail. Highly recommended and welcoming.
If you come to visit, you can taste Aragon's best lamb. It offers great menus for all ages, even breakfast in the morning. It won the best tasting menu of the Zaragoza Restaurants Contest in 2013. You can enjoy everything in the dining room, or during the summer, on the terrace. It's five minutes from the Basilica del Pilar and next to Plaza de Spain.
The squid is delicious.
You can enjoy them as a serving or snack, with sauce or without sauce, spicy or mild ... The place is always packed, but the turnover is very high and you will find a place at the bar after waiting for a bit. If you do not want to wait, you have available the option of ordering takeout.
La Matilde Restaurant is a landmark in Zaragoza. Its owners, the Puyuelo brothers: Luis, José A. and Iván are good professionals well known in the restaurant world. La Matilde’s kitchen mixes tradition and innovation, a cuisine of author which offers creative and quality dishes.
I have to highlight the cellar with more than 700 wines and peculiar things like the folding of serviettes with 90 different ways of doing it; always with the objective of enhancing the tables and giving class to the service in the dining room. The owners are very professional and their love for the restaurant business is such a love that they look after every single detail so clients don’t lose out, of course, this is an extra plus that clients appreciate.
You can start with some "mignardises" (sweets served with the coffee), followed by a king prawn salad with a vinaigrette of roasted tomatoes, nuts and a line of romesco sauce, candied hake in a green sauce with prawns and Iberic ham with a reduction of Izaguirre vermouth and crunchy carrot noodles, washed down with a good wine or whatever you fancy. For dessert a carpaccio of pineapple with saffron with coconut ice cream, cubes of toffee and crunchy almonds. This is only an example of what you can find.
Whatever you choose you will leave happy. The prices are medium, eating a la carte could be about €40 a person.
Located in the most central area of Zaragoza, this restaurant has a large bar with plenty of tapas. I should emphasize its impressive wine cellar, with more than 1000 different wines with popular prices. The specialties are fish and shellfish, which you can choose from a live tank with 12,000 Litres of sea water, as well as roasted meats and seasonal produce. It has parking and multiple rooms to cover all needs.
Casa Juanico is in the historic centre of the city, it’s a restaurant which offers creative food and from the market. Good value for money.
A friend recommended it to me and I went one evening after visiting the House of Infanzón Jerónimo Cósida, the site of the Camón Aznar Museum which is only a few steps away.
It’s a very small place, at the entrance there is a bar with a good selection of tapas and inside a room with tables. What you notice are the tapas, very creative and with names like: monkeys’ brains, little fingers with jam, zucchini with squid, loquat stuffed with blue cheese, and of course, the famous “jamón con chorreras”, the star tapa of the place. This comprises of hard-boiled egg, wrapped in boiled ham, béchamel sauce and fried with batter. You can find meats and fish for more formal meals with high quality products, as well as good wines.
Open from 11:00 to 17:00 and from 20:00 to 24:00 Monday to Saturday; Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00.
I recommend it, it is a place where I will go again and without doubt take my friends.
Novodabo fuses the traditional with the cutting edge. The restaurant has a modern minimalist dining room and an executive menu offering high-quality food at reasonable prices. They also arrange private cooking classes, wine tastings and other activities related to Aragonese cuisine.
This place is popular and central in Zaragoza and offers a wide variety of dishes: homemade fried, toast, fresh fish, meats and seasonal produce. It's all very good quality. They also have a good selection of tapas. And a good deal of Somontano wines, Roja and Ribera del Duero. One of its specialties is the couch covers goose, broken eggs and of course fresh seafood. We had a selection of tapas (4 patties, 2 cheese toasts hot and anchovy, 2 toasts Smoked cod with tomato jam) and 2 glasses of red wine from Somontano. All yummy and reasonably priced at 12.80€. I personally liked the dumplings. The place is not very big, with a large bar. They have a grill in sight of the customers. Prices are listed on blackboards on the walls. It's a nice, family feel place, where quality and price match. I recommend it 100%. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 13-16 and 20-24 hours on Sundays only until noon and closed on Mondays. Enjoy it!
Beckchema, I think you had a bad day because my experience was completely the opposite. It's true that the products are not very elaborate, but quality and care is very good. I haven't tasted the great local cheeses, and are mounted on very good and the price is very appropriate, as I have dinner with four people and paid 12€ per person. Have you made your comments for another purpose?. As I read more comments from you and coincidentally all negative. Is there nothing good in Zaragoza? If you could be so kind as to let me know.
Baobab is a great restaurant to go and have dinner with family or friends. The food is vegetarian, but you won't miss the meat. Great service, and one of the best vegetarian restaurants in all of Zaragoza. I recommend the millefeuille potatoes with green peppers.
Bodegas Almau has passed through 4 generations (since 1870) selling wine on Estébanes street in the historic centre of Zaragoza. In the beginning it was warehouse and a shop. 35 years ago the bar opened where the "chato" (small glass of wine) was the star. The business has been passed from generation to generation until today. It's a busy bar and small bar and it is often filled before it has even opened! It is decorated in wood and barrels. Here you will taste fine wines and delicious tapas, such as nuts or sweet anchovies, which won a prize as a best taps. Delicious. In 2006 based on an artistic initiative came the idea to open the old walled solar for use. Some held gardens and other deposits which had been closed for half a century. Neighbours were encouraged to use these spaces to play football, enjoy the fresh air or drink with friends. The plot that was in front of Bodegas Almau was used as a terrace: the Almau took the barrels whose colour corresponded with the wine: yellow for chardonnay, red for red oak ... They put up parasols and a new space was opened in the city for everyone to enjoy (which others followed): La Terraza de Bodegas Almau. I invite you to visit it, to take a drink, a tapas and then you tell me ... In winter (October to March) there is a tent that blocks out the cold and rain. So there is no excuse to stay home!
