Tapas Bars in Leon
El Rebote
(13)
It has the best croquettes in Leon! Whenever we go for tapas in in the Humid de León neighbourhood, we always go to the Bar Rebote. For me, it's one of the best bars in Leon, and maybe it's because I'm so fond of croquettes and there are all kinds in this bar. But it's a classic and it's always really full, so standing next to the bar and getting into the bar itself is sometimes difficult. I remember that they have every kind of croquette, like bacon and cheese, sausage, tuna, sausage, cheese, sausage, pizza. And also with the fame they've accumulated, you can order to go and eat at home. Soon, I imagine they'll be doing home deliveries as well, because that's all they lack.

La Trastienda del 13

In Calle Ancha de León and opposite the cathedral. There's a luxury terrace where you can go to on a summer night and you'll see the illuminated Cathedral in the background. But what is most striking is the tasteful interior decoration. Read more at: http://www.abuenbocado.com/2012/10/la-trastienda-del-13.html

Mongogo

Deep in Leon's atmospheric Old Town, near the Basilica of San Isidoro, you'll find the Mexican restaurant Mongogo. The decor is a bit peculiar as its walls are covered entirely with paintings made from horror movie posters. The red walls and the cannibalistic touch (the side of the bar is made from imitation zebra skin) make this a little bit of a different spot from the other venues around the area.

We were at a business lunch in the sunroom (patio with flowers and a well) and it has been very successful thanks to traditional design touches, good quantity, careful preparation and being cheap. The mussels in sauce and pâté were sensational - a great deal. Restaurant highly recommended. I will return when I can.

Latino

The Latino is one of the classics of the Húmedo neighborhood and is in the main square of San Martin. It's a place full of life, many people still know it as "The Chemist" for an old sign for a drugstore on the facade that's been there for many years. It has three areas: Tapas bar, restaurant dining and wine cellar. The restaurant offers all kinds of rations and a la carte dishes (meat and fish). Some of its specialties are: Prawns sheltered (in bacon) with cheese sauce, spinach croquettes, sautéed shrimp and avocado with mushrooms, sausages, various salads, quiche, scorpionfish pie, etc. As for the desserts they are homemade and are worthy of mention: the so-called black and white (chocolate pudding) and honey toast with hot chocolate. The portions are generous and it is good value as the average price is about 25 €. The tapas star of the bar are the aioli potatoes, but they also have boiled shrimp, fried chicken and mussels in sauce. Booking is advisable, since in the Húmedo neighborhood, especially on weekends, all the restaurants are usually full and there is much atmosphere.

El Chorco

El Chorco is one of the classics in the Eras tapas area. It's across the street from La Junta de Castilla y León. It's always full of people, because the tapa servings are generous. As in other places, you can choose from several, but I always ask for the toasted scorpion fish cake (delicious). It's decorated like an inn, with wood, stone and wall paintings, but there are some modern elements in terms of painting and lighting.

We pick at some potatoes and squid. All very tasty. They catered well, service was good. In the neighborhood there are so many bars that we had a great time after the meal. I recommend that apart from being in the square, you also take a peek through the streets, there are also very rich tapas bars.

Camarote Madrid
(6)
The Camarote Madrid, generally known as the Madrid, is one of the busiest bars in the Cid neighbourhood. This is a brewery and tapas bar, with a small dining area at the back of the room, with capacity for just 2 or 3 tables. There's a circular bar in the centre of the room. Javi, the owner, is a household name in the city of Leon, and is a great fan of bullfighting, so of course the whole place is decorated with bullfighting motifs: posters, photos of famous bullfighters, clothes, etc. As usual in Leon, you'll get a free tapa with a drink. In this bar, it's usually chips or garlic soup in winter (although they have paella at the weekends), and in summer a seasonal salad or gazpacho. They also serve bigger portions for sharing, and here you won't find many of the most common Leonese dishes. Instead, the food is more Andalucian: Iberian ham, and lots of different varieties of seafood.

Not recommended. 4 of us ate at this restaurant, 2 women and 2 men. We asked for a table for 3 which had mixed: 5 slices Serrano ham, 2 servings of salmon, 2 slices of hake, squid, small dry chops, 3 small scallops, and 5 shrimps. The quality of the food, without being bad, was not worth the 69€ we paid. 2 desserts to share, 8€ each, but most annoying, apart from the extreme slowness of the service,we were charged 6€ for 8 pieces of dry bread! At the end 100€, and the feeling that one and not more, because in Leon there are a thousand places to eat much better for that price.

Bar Correo

The "Post Bar" is one of my usual evening Leon, as Lala2 said, the wines and tapas are great, and at a much better price than others around ... But what I really love about this bar is the moment midnight strikes: they dim the lights and light up the room with candles, that's when it's time to enjoy a good drink. Top quality, well presented and well served and at a great price - Post Bar make the best drinks in the city without a doubt! The waiters are always friendly with customers and the music is from 80s, 90s ... Most importantly the songs are Spanish! Anyway, to sip a fine drink in the early hours of the morning (or later) in a good atmosphere without barrels... Post Bar is 100% the best place to go!

This cafe bar is in a walkway connecting the Avenida Ordono II with the new Calle Burgo, just above the city. IT opens in the early morning for breakfast, and throughout the day you can enjoy wine and tapas. It's one of the tapas bars in "Burgo" area. The bar itself is quite spacious with a U-shaped bar in the middle, and some high tables with stools around the perimeter. Tapas consist of a slice of bread with some sausage, and chips (homemade).

Like any native of Leon, I miss my city a lot, and in particular the customs like free tapas. This is among my favourite bars. The tapas are simple: fried potatoes, finely sliced garlic and paprika. Simple, right? Well, I can assure you that these tapas are deliiiiiiicious! Whenever I go back home, I have to stop here. Usually they open at about 12.00 or 12.30 noon, and then again at about 19.30 for the evening. They're always open late at the weekend, and they even offer takeaways, like cones full of their fried potatoes ... mmmm!

Cervecería Odín

This is located in the tapa district of Leon, Burgo Nuevo. To my mind it is one of the best tapas bars in Leon, with abundant helpings of food. In most bars they won't give you more than two tapas per person, but here you'll get four!! The last time we came here, we enjoyed: fried sausages, stuffed mini croissants, kebabs with peppers, black olives, prawns, croquetas, fish, anchovies with cheese ... amazing! I don't think there are many bars in Leon with a spread like you'll get here, and it's all fantastic, too. However there's always a downside, and in this case it's the setting: it's tiny, and it can be really hard to find a table or room at the bar.

Restaurante Rio Orbigo

Omana River Restaurant is an ideal place to visit if you are traveling in León. When you enter the building you will find a small bar to have a wine and a tapas, but when you go down the stairs you'll find a huge dining room, always full of people. If you haven't booked you will have to wait. It has a typical home cooked menu typical from Léon for nine euros (menus are normally € 12 here) It is excellent with a great variety of dishes, high quality and very filling. The waitresses are very friendly. This will always be my restaurant when I go to Leon.

Terrible customer service and poor quality of restoration. Lack of manners should not represent the great culinary tradition and excellent they should represent in a city like Leon. Don´t waste your time here, instead visit the capital of this kingdom, instead of this place that doesn´t represent what should be a police, quality care.
