Cafés in Guatemala City
Café León

The Lion Café, like the cafe / restaurant Imeri, (now called Aida), is one of the several meeting places that comrises the Historic Center for intellectuals, artists and thinkers. Just a few minutes from Central Park and the Central Market, on 8th Avenue (with an entrance now also in 12th street, unless I'm wrong), the place has the feeling of the 50s, with its ceiling fans and a wooden bar. Obviously, as the name implies, the specialty of the place is the coffee, since the León Café is not only a café but also has been a producer of coffee since the 1930s. Actually can buy bags of coffee to take away. And for those, like me, ve do not appreciate this drink, there is much more to choose from. There are also croissants and other pastries for eating during a little break in the day! the place closes quite early (around 6pm ). Excellent place for taking a break if you are visiting the historic center!

You eat divinely well in Guatemala, and most people spend their lives eating, food stalls are everywhere in the street, on the sidewalk, in houses, on farms, in homes wher there are then carried food to offices or sold by the window (with a paper that says "no bread, no chocobananos, no lunch ..."), and the food is tasty, fresh and varied. A typical meal in a restaurant is more or less 12 to 15 Quetzales, or less than one and a half euros. This includes a plate, usually a chicken broth with rice, beans, three tortillas de mais, a soda, and sometimes a fruit or dessert. If you do not want to stand up or sit down to eat street food there Chéveres Lunches, which are like hot dogs, shucos, which are Chéveres, but with guacamole, and the sausage is made in steam but the guy puts you in a steak and cut into small pieces with cabbage, and you put your sauce on, with pupusas, which is cookie dough, mixed with mais with beans, meat or cheese, tamales, corn gruel, and more. These are worth 5Q, soda 3Q and oranges squeezed into a plastic bag 3Q same.

Cafe de Imeri

A few minutes from the central park of Guatemala City, if you dare to walk through the historic center (zone 1), there is a nice restaurant: formerly known as "Imeri", it was recently renamed "Aida". Within the busy downtown area, you can find this peaceful cafe, with a small courtyard with trees and plants. The menu is not very big: in addition to the daily menu (soup, main course and drink for 3.5 euros), there are many hearty pasta dishes, sandwiches or Mexican flutes . They also have several cookies made to go. YOu will find a number historians overwhelmed by their morning's work crossing in the General Archives nearby with clerks, as well as some foreigners lost in the area or volunteers working in Guatemala ... a cheap lunch, tasty, in a quiet place in the center!

This excellent restaurant offers live Cuban music on Fridays, has very good service and the food is a delight, particularly the delicious fried beef. There should be more places like this in Guatemala. The atmosphere is very Cuban, the decor is impeccable, there is a lot of parking and security is very good. The Cuban Mojitos are the best that I have ever tasted!

La Perla

If you go for a walk in zone 1 (the historic center) of Guatemala City - where not many tourists go, La Perla is a good option for lunch. Located in the central and renewed area of Sixth Avenue to Central Park, it is actually located one block from the park. The restaurant La Perla is one of many that offers an "executive lunch", or menu. The menu includes a soup, a drink ("refreshment" or flavored water), and the main course. It must be confessed that you can find cheaper menus, but this cost 35Q (3.5 euros more or less). But what I liked about La Perla is the decoration, styled in a way similar to the 1930's and 60's, its location with windows overlooking the bustling Sixth, and great choice of dishes to choose from: In general you can only choose between 2 or 3 courses here. There are nearly 10, including fish! And the dishes arrive full and abundant, good quality. There is also a great breakfast available - a fantastic place for travellers to dine.

Danta Chocolate

Guatemala is a producer of cocoa, but if they don´t use the super good chocolate, they only use Hershey´s from the United States. I have to admit that I am a complainer, so to shut me up they offered me a delicious treat... a box of twenty chocolates from the province of Danta Chocolate: wow! Refined delicious and tasty! Made with cocoa from Guatemala (something unusual in the world of chocolate), it is already very well known internionally among chocolate specialists. My favorite chocolate Zacapa Centenario rum (not the typical chocolate with liquor inside, but a strong chocolate with this delicious rum saborcito) Mint Chocolate Fleur de Sel, refreshing, raspberry, orange blossom and chocolate dark, heart-shaped, delicious! I need to try the chili and allspice Coban (the eating slowly going to give you the box!). I do not know if the chocolates are sold only in boxes or also pro unit. Danta also sells chocolate bars, they can choose between black, or white milk, and citrus orchard q prefer! In short everything to everyone. It was a gift, so that price I can not tell much, have some samples on the website, and of course good quality has its price! This is really worth it though, if you have the time and the money for this luxury!

Hacienda Real Restaurant

Western Guatemala is the country's most beautiful region. During the whole trip, all you see are beautiful landscapes with volcanoes, tiled adobe houses, cultivated areas coloured with different shades of green, and restaurants with typical Guatemalan food. The best is when you feel the cold, characteristic of the region, primarily in the months of November, December, January and February. About 30 years ago I was in the restaurant La Hacienda Real de tecpan, about 90 km to the west, and I took a photo with my first newborn son next to a creek. There are also green areas where you can walk around and enjoy the scenery, or go horseback riding. The truth is that this is a place that I travel to frequently and where I like to have lunch with my family. We go there a lot and it is relatively close to the capital.
