    Where to Stay in Tunis

    El Mouradi Hotel Africa Tunis
    Hotels in
    Tunis
El Mouradi is probably the best hotel in Tunisia. As soon as we arrived we realized we had found the perfect place to stay. It's quiet, the wifi works in all the rooms, and the views are amazing. My room was on the 17th floor, but the hotel has 22 in total. Great.

    Hotel Riu Marco Polo
    Hotels in
    Hammamet
The rooms are spacious and have a terrace with a view of the ocean. Upon arrival they give you the all inclusive wristband that gets you anything you want. I couldn´t enjoy the pool because there wasn´t good weather but I really wanted to. For the breakfast and dinner buffet, you must be punctual because they start to remove the food when runs out. It´s a bit far from downtown to walk but there are taxis available right at the door. If you do not want to be disturbed in the morning, you can put the sign on the door. If not, the cleaning lady might surprise you!

    Tunisia Palace hotel
    Hotels in
    Tunis
The best part of the hotel is the location: in the center and very close to the entrance to the Medina (Puerta de France). The rooms and the bathroom are spacious. The bed is comfortable and the curtains cover just the right amount of light. The worst part: you can smoke in the rooms and it smells like snuff (there are small details that show that the hotel has seen better days, and the decor is somewhat outdated, but it shows that when it opened it must have been a great hotel. The restaurant is open to the public. During the day the sun shines through the glass roof, a game with the lights.

    Maison Dorée Hotel
    Hotels in
    Tunis
Excellently located on [poi = 115144] Ville Nouvelle [/ poi] (I walked back at night without any problems). This hotel is a great option for budget travelers. With a French atmosphere that's decadent and antiquated, but very clean and comfortable, the Maison Dorée has rooms on several floors, connected by a grand staircase. The rooms are all different. I was there twice: The first time I was there I stayed in a room with curtains, decorations and red bedspread. The second time I was in another room that was painted blue with yellow details. All rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, ceiling fans (some even have air conditioning) and comfortable bathrooms. The hotel also has a restaurant that serves good Tunisian dishes.

    Zona Residencial de Cartago
    Vacation Resorts in
    Carthage
The ruins of Carthage were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO [/ b] in 1979, but not everything in Carthage is ruined. Currently the 13 kilometer periphery is one of the most luxurious and exclusive in Tunis. It's lined with elegant mansions and embassies. One of the things that stuck out to me is that the Presidential Palace (where the President of the Republic lives) can be found right next to the Antonine Baths, which are protected by a long white wall. Our tour guide warned us not to take pictures because it's forbidden to photograph any official building (including this one). The whole environment is monitored with cameras and armed police officers. When we got to the bus in front of the main gate of the palace it was amazing. It's beautiful, and I couldn't help remembering the movie "Empress Sissi."

    Yadis Ibn Khaldoun Hotel
    Hotels in
    Tunis
Ibn Khaldoun Hotel is a 3-star hotel in the center of Tunis. However, it is about a 40 minutes' walk from the real tourist area (Place de la Victoire), and a taxi costs about 3-4 DNT (about 2 euros). It was our first hotel in Tunisia and the truth is that I didn't like it at first but after experiencing others on our tour of the country I have to say that it wasn't too bad. From the outside, the building looks pretty run down. It's 11 floors high and the facade, which should be white, is completely dirty. The reception, though, is all polished and gleaming marble. The room was pretty small and shabby. The furniture was yellowish wood, and it had two single beds pushed together, with bedside tables and a small desk with a mirror and trunk. On the table was a TV (not available in all Tunisian hotels). The floor was carpeted and the bedding and curtains looked a bit tacky with their identical floral blue pattern. The bathroom was quite nice, though. It was spacious and had a large bathtub with curtain, a sink with a large mirror, and a toilet (the locals don't use toilet paper, but they do provide it for westerners). There was only a soap dispenser on the wall, but the water pressure was decent. It was clean, but there was one problem: the windows didn't seal properly, so we were cold at night (we went during Easter when the night temperatures are less than 10ºC). Well, at least there were plenty of blankets. We were on half board, and the food was terrible - although not the worst we had in Tunisia. Breakfast was a rather boring buffet with bread, butter, jam, mini croissants, two types of yogurt and cereals. The coffee wasn't too bad, but the juice was undrinkable (from powder). I asked for a glass of water, and was told they didn't have any, and I'd have to order it from the bar (for an extra cost, of course). The lunch/dinner buffet that was more or less the same - pasta with sauce, salads (raw cabbage, baked potato, rice, bowls of tomato and cucumber), a stewed chicken dish swimming in sauce and "fish" (no idea what type). The only good part was the dessert - a variety of cakes that were really good (and I don't really have much of a sweet tooth). If you wanted fruit, there were only oranges on offer. In short, a passable hotel, but by no means fantastic.

After spending the weekend of 28-29/02/2009 here, I can give my views about this establishment - and they aren't positive. I was expecting some fun for the children, but there were none. The welcome was poor, and the service wasn't good. For 4 stars, it was ridiculous.

    Ariha Hotel
    Hotels in

Excellent hotel with good service for only 20 euros a night. Ahh, one clarification- always ask if the hotel can get you a taxi if you go out at night because now that we're entering spring it can be inconvenient for tourists.

This hotel is very well located in the new city. A good and affordable option for accommodation in Tunisia, it is comfortable and clean, with several rooms on different floors. Each room is different: one has red curtains and bedspread, another blue with yellow highlights ... but they're all spacious, with high ceilings and ceiling fans (some have air conditioning), and comfortable bathrooms. The restaurant serves good Tunisian food.

    Hotel du Parc
    Hotels in
    Tunis
The location isn't too central - to reach the Medina, you'll have to walk briskly for about twenty minutes - but you're out of the chaotic traffic of the Tunisian capital. Close to a sports centre and the entrance to the airport road, it's a good starting point to explore Tunis and its surroundings. The rooms are arranged in two wings, which start from the monumental hall, simply furnished and comfortable. There's a bar (men only) and a large restaurant with both Tunisan food (brik and vegetable soup with harissa) and international offerings (pizza and spaghetti) at affordable prices. The breakfast buffet is good, with both sweet and savory food.

    Ennasr II District
    Apartments in
    Tunis
This neighbourhood is on the outskirts of Tunis, but not too far from the centre (20 minutes by taxi) It's a residential area with plenty of shops, lively but not very traditional - it's a newer part of the city, in a more European style. Disadvantages: it's expensive here, as it's one of the trendier parts of the city. But it's a very safe area, and is ideal for short stays if you'd rather avoid the centre of the city, especially in summer when it gets too hot. There's a cooling breeze here. You can find a place to stay for between 40 and 60 dinars a day, fully equipped with a bedroom, living room, bathroom, kitchen, cleaning, security, intercom, telephone, heating, air conditioning ... everything.
